The Atlantic's giant current is slowing, and the ocean may be getting stranger than expected. However, a new study challenges this view, revealing a surprising twist. As the Atlantic's overturning circulation weakens, the region's salt balance may swing harder than ever recorded, posing a greater threat than temperature. This phenomenon, known as the North Atlantic Salinity Oscillation, cycles roughly every ten years, driven by a complex interplay of salt and heat. The study, led by climate scientist Tomoki Iwakiri, reveals that the Gulf Stream's slowing and the widening salt gap between southern and northern waters are linked to the weakening AMOC. These shifts, amplified by salt and heat, create extreme salinity swings that persist even as the planet cools. The implications are significant, especially for Europe's coasts, where rising sea levels and coastal flooding risks are heightened.
